At the Community Foundation of Grundy County (CFGC), our mission has always been to connect people who care with causes that matter, improving the quality of life in Grundy County through leadership and philanthropy. As CFGC continues to grow and charitable giving becomes more complex, it is important that our staff continue to grow our knowledge so we can better serve donor and the community. Continuing our professional education is one way we are making that investment. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to complete Daylight’s Impact Philanthropy Advisor (IPA) certification. The IPA program provides a broad overview of philanthropic advising for those new to the field or looking to gain knowledge in multiple areas of charitable giving.
The IPA certification is an internationally recognized professional development program designed for community foundation professionals, financial advisors, attorneys, accountants, and nonprofit leaders who help individuals and families make charitable giving decisions. Through a 20-week curriculum, I was able to learn about legacy and gift planning, donor engagement, impact investing, ethical philanthropy, foundations, and many other aspects of charitable giving. During the program, I was able to work alongside a cohort of professionals from across the globe, creating opportunities to share real-life experiences, discuss challenges, and learn from one another.
While the technical knowledge gained through the program is incredibly valuable, I found the focus on the “why” behind charitable giving to be just as important. Donors in Grundy County can be assured that CFGC has always considered the “why” behind each charitable gift when working with donors. While this has always been part of our approach, it is reassuring to know that this donor-centered philosophy is recognized as a best practice in philanthropy. Using this approach helps navigate charitable giving with confidence and creativity. Whether someone wants to establish a scholarship in memory of a loved one, create a family fund, support a favorite nonprofit, or leave a legacy through their estate, the knowledge gained through certifications, like the IPA program, help us provide guidance that reflects each donor’s unique goals.
Because the Community Foundation works closely with local nonprofits, schools, municipalities, and community leaders, we have a good understanding of our community’s needs as well as the opportunities that exist to address them. Pairing that local knowledge with the best practices learned through the national certifications allows us to help donors make informed decisions that maximize the impact of their charitable giving.
As our community continues to grow and change, so do the ways people choose to give back. Families are looking for ways to involve the next generation in philanthropy. Business owners are considering charitable giving as part of their long-term planning. Individuals are thinking about the legacy they want to leave behind. The Impact Philanthropy Advisor certification provides participants with additional tools and perspective to help guide those conversations and ensure donors have the information they need to make decisions that are right for them.
At the Community Foundation of Grundy County, we believe our role is about more than managing charitable funds. We are here to listen, provide guidance, and help donors turn their generosity into lasting impact. Investing in professional development like the Daylight Impact Philanthropy Advisor certification is one way we continue to strengthen that commitment.
