2017 was a very good year for our investment of the donor-designed funds we are fortunate to steward here at the Community Foundation of Grundy County.
As you may know, when donors set up funds here they are given a choice of four (4) different asset mixes for that new fund – 80/20, 50/50, 20/80, and 0/100. Please click on the link below for a chart showing the history of our investment performance. Of course past performance is not a guarantee of future performance!
A good investment year means that donor-designed funds have more money to grant to their favorite charities.
But what about bad years? First, we appreciate the diverse portfolio that Balasa Dinverno Foltz, LLC, has structured for us. Because of this diversity, our portfolio has done well in the up years and not-as-bad in the down years.
Secondly, for endowed funds it all evens out quite a bit because we calculate the annual distribution amount by averaging the returns of the past 12 quarters (3 years). We find that this smooths out the highs and lows of the market for a fairly consistent distribution. This way fundholders can better plan for their annual grantmaking.

A big “thank you” to our Investment Committee and to our friends at Balasa Dinverno Foltz, LLC, for their great advice and service!
Here’s to an equally good 2018!
